About Broken Arrow:
Located in both Tulsa and Wagoner counties, Broken Arrow is the 5th largest city in Oklahoma with over 92,000 residents and is located 15 minutes from downtown Tulsa. With a land area of 45 square miles, Broken Arrow has been the fastest growing city in the Tulsa metropolitan area and the state for the past two decades and has become the state's third largest manufacturing community (behind Tulsa and Oklahoma City).
Broken Arrow takes its name from a group of Creek Indians that settled in the area after gathering materials for making arrows. Since they had broken branches from the trees instead of cutting them to make their arrows, they named their new camp Thlikachka or Broken Arrow. The demand for quality of life existed 100 years ago when Broken Arrow became an official "town" in Oklahoma territory. The railroad passed through this location on its way from Muskogee to Tulsa, and families began migrating here. For most of the next 60 years, Broken Arrow life centered around cattle and horse ranches and the city consisted of rural ranch and farm land and a small, but active, Main Street business district. From the time Broken Arrow became a real "town" in 1903 until the mid-1960s, Broken Arrow's population remained fairly constant with a few hundred to a few thousand. When the Broken Arrow Expressway opened in the mid-1960s joining downtown Tulsa with the Broken Arrow community, real estate developers quickly recognized the potential for a population explosion. Every decade since has brought about 20,000 more residents to this community.
The common thread which has developed over the past four decades of dramatic growth has been a demand for quality of life centered around family. And even today, with its population continuing to grow closer and closer to the 100,000 mark, Broken Arrow has maintained its focus on the safety of its residents. In 2004 Broken Arrow was rated the "Safest City In Oklahoma," and ranked 46th in the entire nation based on crime figures for cities of more than 75,000 in population. It repeated that honor in 2005, again far ahead of any other state cities in that population range. MONEY Magazine announced its 2006 list of the "Best Places to Live in America", and Broken Arrow was the only city from northeastern Oklahoma to make the Top 90, coming in at number 66. Broken Arrow is one of only two cities in Oklahoma to be named on the list of America's "Most Livable Small Cities" by a national publication. The city has also been honored as a "Tree City USA" the every year since 2001 by the National Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to trees in the parks and in the community as a whole.
Broken Arrows offers a wonderful quality of life for its residents including parks and recreation, along with public safety and education. Two of Oklahoma's top public school districts serve the community: Broken Arrow and Union. Northeastern State University opened a Broken Arrow branch campus in 2001 and continues to thrive. Rhema Bible College has long been a fixture in Broken Arrow and brings in students from all over the world each year. The Broken Arrow Community Playhouse has been recognized statewide for its quality productions year after year; the community theatre program has been honored as Oklahoma's best; and, the high school bands annually carry home top honors from state and national competitions. Saint Francis Hospital at Broken Arrow is one of the finest medical facilities in Northeastern Oklahoma, and professional buildings are being added to the hospital and physical therapy units. Kid sports programs are popular and supported in Broken Arrow. The city has excellent youth sports facilities and each year host the national boys' and girls' softball championships and World Series. The city has earned a reputation as Oklahoma's "Youth Sports Capital" for the way in which the citizens and municipal government provide facilities for and support kid sports.
One thing that you'll find in just about any direction in Broken Arrow is a golf course. Many of those are built around, or within, housing additions. Battle Creek Golf Course is owned by the City, and developers offer a variety of housing options around it. Indian Springs Country Club was one of the first in the state to blend neighborhoods with fairways and greens. Cedar Ridge Country Club to the west is the hub for some of the more upscale neighborhoods in the area. Forest Ridge Golf Course to the far east is booming with linksters and homeowners. The Broken Arrow Golf and Athletic Club on the city's north side boasts a number of multi-family offerings.
Broken Arrow offers types of neighborhoods for anyone and everyone from older and newer, to urban and more rural settings. Neighborhoods get younger and the cost of housing typically more expensive the further west and south. The extension of the Creek Turnpike through Broken Arrow has opened up more and more development in both the south and east side areas, and some of the newer and more expensive homes are now found in the Wagoner County portion of Broken Arrow
Broken Arrow prides itself on having a high quality of life with excellent schools, parks, nice restaurants and much more. A respect for traditional family values and religious diversity, a strong public educational system, quality employment opportunities, cultural activities and close access to the large city amenities in Tulsa make Broken Arrow the ideal place to work and live. Broken Arrow truly demonstrates the home of the American Dream and is what its citizens consider to be "the best of the best places to live."
